A Review of the new Matzie ASSIST Golf Swing Trainer

I have been giving golf lessons for the past fifteen years, and because of this I have been trying out golf training aids to help make my golf lessons for effective. I have tried the Leadbetter Swing Setter, the Fix A Slice, the Perfect Swing and tons of other different golf swing aids that have been both good and bad. Some have been worth the money, others have made it into the dumpster after the first couple of swings.

Today I would like to tell you all about my experiences with the Matzie ASSIST swing trainer. I have used this product for over a month now at The Villages of Terra Vista at Citrus Hills and the results have been positive. Matzie has brought a very competent product to the golf market and hopefully I will help you make the decision to try this new training aid.

The Matzie ASSIST instantaneously golf swing trainer helped me and my students with Tempo. It is astonishing that even after thirty years of playing the great game of golf that you will get rusty when you do not practice the basic ground rules of your golf swing. Because of the ASSIST’s heavy weight, it helps you remember to pause at the top of your golf swing. It reminds you to extend through the ball, and to finish with your hands held high, not yanked across the body, which usually results in either a pull-hook or a heeled slice. I had five of my students take the ASSIST home and spend 15 to 30 minutes a day with it after each lesson and they are all hitting the ball much better. Each one of the five students training with the ASSIST is now hitting the ball straighter, longer, and more accurately because of the ASSIST.

After doing some research, I have found that the ASSIST is virtually unbreakable. There are no hinges or weak points to break or crack on this golf training aid. You would have to purposely try to break this product by beating it repeatedly against a rock or perhaps running it over with a crane would work.

I first thought the molded grip was a bit “too much,” i.e. the right hand was situated slightly too much under the golf club shaft, but my own experience convinced me that my own grip was “weak” and would advantage from a position adjustment. This has proved to be true. If a purchaser does not like the grip, perhaps a pro should be consulted. In any case, if the purchaser does not want to get in to changing his or her grip, it is easy enough to have a regular grip put on!

In general I would highly recommend this golf product to any golf looking to purchase a golf swing training aid. It is an unbelievable golf swing training aid and has the ability to help cure even the most awful golf swing habits.

Perfecting Your Golf Swing

Most golfers will say the hardest part of their game is focus. The mental side of golf is one spoken of but often overlooked. Do you have a friend that golfs well on every round? Why is that? Practice, they practice. What they usually do not share is, what they are practicing at. They practice at mental toughness; golf has often been referred to as 10% Talent 90% mental. When overcoming that mental side of golf, do you try to change your equipment, the time at which you play, maybe even they guys you play with. Here are some tips that are going to help you be, the golfer, you always wanted to be.

The tempo of golf is often a distraction for golfers, you are stuck behind a slow foursome DISTRACTING or maybe the guys behind you are rushing you DISTRACTING and you feel that pressure to golf faster. Let your your tempo dictate your game! Not the tempo of the people around you. The tempo of your swing is so important; to achieve the desired results. How do I find my tempo you ask? A golfer can find their tempo by doing these simple things:

SLOW DOWN!! People often think that if they can swing faster and hit the ball harder they will get results, this is not the case at all. SLOW DOWN and focus on YOUR tempo not the tempo of the game. This is true is some instances, but, for the sake of this article we will not be discussing those concepts. No matter where you are playing or who you are playing with; the tempo you keep is is going to make you take the same back swing, have you contacting the ball the same, and allowing you to follow through the same every time. How do you practice tempo? While at the driving range your focus should only be on one club at a time. First hit 20 range balls with your driver, next hit 20 range balls with your 9 iron, Next your 3 wood and your 8 iron follow this method until you have hit every club in your bag. To perfect your back swing come to the same position every time. When you contact the ball make sure you are contacting the ball at the same rate of speed with every club. If You swing hard with woods you should swing hard with irons do not let the club size dictate you tempo. If you focus on your tempo you will see that by swinging all of your clubs the same your accuracy will improve drastically. Follow through is the same as your back swing you need to follow through the same on every shot. Your follow through will affect your accuracy a 100% of the time. When you focus on these three techniques you will find that your mental game will improve.

This is a three step process after you are done at the driving range it is time to head to the chipping green. Start by working with your wedges, then move on to you short irons. You need to use every club for at least 100 chips. Start with your wedges in the deeper grass and focus not on getting in the hole but just putting the ball on the green. If you are hitting the ball with the same tempo every time, your chipping will be more accurate. Remember chipping should be another tool in your arsenal and not the final result. Many careers have been made from singles and doubles hitters it is not just the home run hitters that decide how games turnout. If you can keep your mind focused on the task at hand you are going to chip and hit the green every time. Now take your 8I and 9I over to the short grass and work on your bump and run. Tempo is still your main focus you are just using a club for a different shot, the tempo is still the same though. Your tempo is what matters!! Imagine you are still hitting that same wedge, Change the Club not the Tempo!!

Putting Putting Putting! This is not rocket science but yet very misunderstood? We have now gone from Driving range tempo to chipping tempo to putting tempo the TEMPO does not change only the environment. What you want to practice here is the same thing! You want to work on your tempo. You are never going to change your swing for a putt. The only thing about putting that changes is the distance. Start by sinking 10 putts in a row from 1ft away after you have done this, move out to 2ft, repeat until you sink 10 in a row from 10ft away. Keep the same tempo.

The goal for these exercises is to teach your to go through the same steps every time. You are working on your tempo, your tempo can not be affected by anything because it is yours. Seeing results is going to depend on how much time you take to find your tempo!! The game is 90% mental; set a clock in your mind that only allows for the same tempo no matter when or where you are golfing. By creating this method of training for your body, your mind will have no choice but to respond by focusing on what you are trying to do.

A Golf Fitness Coach Equals Good Golf

Golf fitness coach. Have you still considered one…and if so, what systematically were you looking for? There are lots of ‘frequent fitness’ trainers trying to pay for a piece of the golf fitness and training market that seems to be fast gaining exposure equally on the television and inside print thanks to Tiger, Vijay and Annika.

But the first thing you require to think when looking into hiring a golf fitness coach or program is the trainers experience inside golf.

Yes…that is high on the list of requirements. Does he/she know golf? Do they know the biomechanics of the golf swing? How about muscle function during the golf swing?

An easy test is during the initial interview or if you’re researching it online is to either ask very golf specific swing method questions; or take a look at the information on the website. You’ll find out real quick if this person or program can improve your golf swing, game and health.

A golf fitness coach or program be supposed to incorporate power, flexibility, endurance, body awareness, balance, stability and even a nutrition component.

It’s simple for a trainer to have a strength component…but is it specific to golf? A quick test. Take a look at any of the exercises. Are any of them on seated machines for instance? If they are…run! This is NOT a golf fitness coach and/or program. This is considered ‘frequent fitness’.

At present stretching. There are dozens of stretches for every public. But take a look at any of them. Do they even remotely look like they will benefit your golf swing?

Stretches involving trunk flexibility; lower back; hamstring; and even shoulders specific to the mechanics of the swing are what you want. Ordinary stretches are greater than nothing, but will delay your results. You prefer specific stretches.

Body awareness. Does any of the exercises resemble golf positions or phases of the swing? Do they look like you would be on your feet and in your golf posture? As stated above, if they are seated on machines, your body will learn nothing inside regards to your golf swing.

Training your body specific to golf incorporates positions almost identical to what your body would be inside during some section of the golf swing.

Stability. Training your body to boost stability in your swing be able to pay for a little complex if you really choose to see results. The swing happens at between 80-100 miles an hour. One of the biggest flaws of amateur golfers is moving in their golf swing.

Moving either laterally (sliding), vertically (up and done) or equally. This is death to your golf swing. To increase your stability involves specific power drills most trainers don’t even know about.

I possibly will go on-and-on about the requirements of a golf fitness coach or program. It is critical you make the right choice. I have heard horror stories of golfers working using ‘so-called’ golf fitness experts and their game getting worse. With the proper research this won’t happen to you. So definitely think a golf fitness coach.

A better golf swing is inevitable…for any golfer, with the right approach. It doesn’t matter age or ability. It’s a reality…and can happen very quickly!

To achieve a better golf swing, a golfer needs to realize just how physically demanding it is on the human body. If you swing an object (golf club) at up to 100 mph. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles.

If these tissues of the body are weak, tight or brittle they will rupture and eliminate you from playing golf indefinitely. If it doesn’t, your performance will pay the price. The outcome either way is not what you want…but will happen without an emphasis on strengthening these areas.

Along with strengthening comes stretching. Stretching muscles to attain a better golf swing is common among most golfers. Although it is common, most golfers don’t stretch. Why? Because it is viewed as ‘work’. But if it were viewed as a form of golf improvement it would be a different story.

Swing mechanics cannot be improved if your golf specific strength and flexibility are ignored. It is an impossibility, unless you compensate for this lack of capabilities in your golf swing. Teaching pros are now starting to realize there is a definite connection between golf swing mechanics and fitness.

But that’s where the BIG gap is. Between instruction and physical fitness. This is the ultimate combination for total golf performance and I have been preaching it for several years now. When your physical capabilities are improved, your golf swing mechanics become much easier to achieve.

The next time you visit your teaching pro, to achieve a better golf swing, you’ll be able to do what he/she wants and the desired outcome will be achieved. This outcome is inevitable when you get your body moving better. Your golf swing mechanics fall into place.

It will only be a matter of time when all golfers will approach their golf improvement this way. It’s the only way that will warrant lasting results and ultimately a better golf swing.

You just need to understand that a better golf swing is not depended upon how hard you hit the ball but, how much speed you put behind it. Strength will NOT out drive the speed hitter. Perfecting your swing to become consistent with every swing then, speed will follow and thus hitting a longer drive.

Just remember that a person who has stronger upper body strength will not always out hit the golf player who has increased his speed to the ball through consistent and a proper follow through.

One other very important factor is that the long hitter will not always outdo the player who is consistent and can get the ball in the hole in less strokes. Right?

What’s your idea of a perfect round of golf? If you were to shoot 72, would that be a perfect round to you? The best players in the world only hit approximately 70% of their fairways and 12 - 13 of their greens in regulation when they play, and yet, they can still shoot 72 or better. So if the pros aren’t perfect, and they still shoot great numbers, what should your idea of perfect be? You’re idea of perfect is should be that you can never achieve it. Why’s it so important to understand that you’ll never be perfect? It’s so important, because at your level, trying to be perfect puts added pressure on your game. The game of golf has enough pressure already without you adding more. So if you stop trying to be perfect, you can lighten up a little and have more fun playing this game.

Give Yourself Permission to Make Mistakes

If you can understand that you’ll never be perfect while playing this game, you can finally give yourself permission to make mistakes when you go to play instead of getting down on yourself. You can stop scratching your head in disbelief after you hook that drive or miss the green because even the best players aren’t perfect. Permission to make mistakes will also allow you to focus on your future shots, instead of dwelling on the past. Before your next round, tell yourself that you’re going to hit some bad shots and there’s nothing you can do about it. If you tell yourself this, you’ll reduce the pressure you are putting on yourself allowing you to have a more enjoyable round.

Pitching, Chipping and Greenside Bunkers

These can be some of the most difficult shots in golf. Because these shots are so difficult, and because people rarely practice them, it should be obvious that you’re not going to hit all of these shots within 3 feet of the hole. The next time you’re faced with a tough little pitch shot, a long chip or tough bunker shot, instead of hoping to get the ball close, why not think about just getting the ball on the green? If you just try to get the ball on the green, you are not pressuring yourself to hit a perfect shot. If you take this new approach you might be surprised at how close these short shots will end up.

Putting

If you think you are going to make every 6 foot putt you’re mistaken. Putting guru, Dave Pelz, figured out that the pros only make 50% from 6 feet, 20% from 10 feet and 10% from 15 feet. Once you realize these stats, you’ll stop getting mad at yourself for missing putts. If you miss a six footer and whack your foot with your putter in disgust, not only will you have a hard time walking to the next hole, but it will be more difficult maintaining your composure on the next tee shot. So the best thing you can do when you miss a putt, is to tell yourself that it’s no big deal. The stats prove that even the best players in the world, only make a small number of putts.

The Practice Range is for Practicing

In teaching golf for over 15 years, I have been exposed to all types of golfers. The main thing I see on the practice range, is that people care more about where their ball is going than they do about what they are working on. Because of this, they often get angry when they hit bad shots. If this sounds familiar, you have to realize that the practice range is the place you should be practicing. You should be working on something in your game that needs to be worked on. It is not a place where you should be trying to hit every shot perfectly. If you’re working on a swing position or change, there’s no way you’re going to master it in 5 minutes. This means you should be hitting bad shots when you practice. Make sure that the next time you go to the range, you use this time to work on something. Forget about trying to hit perfect shots and think about perfecting the positions you’re working on. The faster you make the changes, the closer to perfect your shots will become.

How Perfect Are You?

If you really want to see how perfect you are all you have to do is put yourself to the test. Go out on a quiet Sunday afternoon and hit 2 balls playing the best shot with each ball. Keep your score and see how you make out at the end of the round. Once you add up your score, you’ll truly see how close to perfect you really are.

The best golf exercises are not complicated; you don’t need to be a member of a gym; and you don’t need thousands of dollars in equipment. Yes…there are new golf fitness machines coming out in the market that look respectable, but they want an arm and a leg for them.

When you think of the best golf exercises, you’ve got to think like an athlete for a minute. Golf is an athletic sport, and thanks to guys like Tiger Woods, golfers are realizing they need to train like an athlete to see improvement.

Most athletes don’t ever use machines. Machines guide you through certain ranges of motion that don’t benefit the golf swing. The golf swing is a very dynamic movement, that is not like other movements.

The baseball swing is very similar from a mechanical standpoint…but two distinct differences. In baseball you ‘react’ to a moving object (in golf the ball is not moving); and in baseball the ball is approximately waist high and in golf it’s on the ground.

So in order to incorporate the best golf exercises, you’ve got to take a look at your body position and the muscles involved to maintain that position.

What is it?

We know at address you have a tilt in your spine, a bend at the hips and knees. And even a little ankle flex. That’s a somewhat athletic position, similar to a squat, but not quite.

Now…not only are you in the position, but now you have to swing a long lever (club) at over 80 plus mph and stay in this position (posture).

Impossible if you have weak and stiff golf specific muscles!

Here’s is a quick test. When you are in your golf posture, just start touching the muscles in your body that are flexed. It will be the quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves and even the lower back muscles.

So we know that the best golf exercises will hit those muscle groups (and preferably in a standing position).

Now add the very powerful rotation of your upper body (backswing) and you’ve got the core involved. So you’ll need to do some golf exercises that incorporate core rotation and flexibility.

As you can see, the best golf exercises are NOT on machines and do not need to be done in a gym.

All you need is a pair of dumbbells, some inexpensive exercise tubing and maybe a weighted medicine ball and you can dramatically improve your golf swing right in your home in less than 30 minutes a day!

Strength Training For Golf – No Gym Required

Strength training for golf is viewed by golfers as a lot of work, time-consuming, boring and you need a gym membership to do it. None of the above is true, and if you read this article, I’ll explain why.

You see… strength training for golf isn’t on machines anyways…so that eliminates the requirement of a gym. All you need is a pair of handweights, exercise tubing and a stability ball and you’ve got your entire “in-home” golf fitness gym.

It’s not a lot of work, if you pick and choose the area you want to focus on. It’s not time-consuming if you do it in the convenience of your home, and have a plan of action. And lastly, it can be a lot of fun, when you use bands, exercise balls and training equipment specific to golf.

There many “so-called” strength training for golf programs, but when you take a look at them, you’ll see pictures of golfers sitting on their butts in a machine. I don’t know about you, but I think golf is done “on your feet”, right?

Strength training for golf is becoming “mainstream” with the golfing community. We see and hear all the pros doing it and playing their best golf; so why wouldn’t we amateurs do it also?

There are so many reasons why to participate in a strength training for golf program, that you can’t overlook it and say you don’t need it.

Lacking power in your swing? It’s because your body can’t produce any stored energy from a full backswing with torque in your core. That’s a ‘physical’ issue, not mechanical.

Is your golf swing inconsistent from one swing to the next? Swing faults originate from some deeper physical limitation that’s not allowing you to make a mechanically sound and repeatable swing. How many times have you taken a lesson and heard your pro say, “you need to make a full backswing”, but you just can’t physically do it? That’s a ‘physical’ issue, not mechanical.

How about injuries? Do you have one at the moment? The golf swing is physically damaging to the body if you don’t have enough strength and flexibility to withstand the force the golf swing puts on it. Swinging a 3 foot long lever (club) at up to 90 mph is unbelievably stressful on the joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles of the body. That’s a ‘physical’ issue, not mechanical.

I could go on and on, but I think you might get the idea by now.

Strength training for golf may be your “missing link” to your best game ever! If you’ve tried all the ‘other’ methods, this is the ONLY one left. Why wouldn’t you explore the possibilities a little more?

Stretching For Golf Isn’t What You Think

Stretching for golf is critical to slowing down the rapid decline senior golfers experience, as well as reducing the stress on the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. The golf swing puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the body, and unless you are participating in a consistent stretching for golf program, you will be a statistic.

The statistic I’m talking about is being one of the millions of golfers who aren’t improving and who are injured at some point every season you play. Does this sound like you? If so, keep reading to find out how you avoid being a statistic, and instead be one of the very few who actually improve and play their best golf.

The golf swing is dynamic. What I mean is it involves motion. This motion needs to be fluid, tension-less, and powerful. The only way to accomplish this is with dynamic strength and stretching drills aimed specifically at your golf swing faults.

This approach to golf improvement is not utilized among most amateur golfers, but if done correctly will take your game to the highest level in the quickest amount of time.

In most of the golf fitness books, videos and articles you read, you will see the golfer holding a particular stretch for up to 60 seconds.

Let me ask you this!

Do you ever hold any part of your golf swing when you’re playing or hitting balls? I don’t think so. So why would you train your body in this fashion? You wouldn’t! You would look at certain positions in the golf swing and incorporate dynamic (movement) stretches to improve those positions in an efficient manner.

For example, let’s say you are having a tough time making a full backswing. The backswing is a fluid and tension-less movement that is destroyed when you add tension or restriction to it.

Instead, you would make some backswing moves, going as far as you can, then a little farther and releasing it. Doing this 8-10 times throughout the day. You can do this in your office or at home. No need for a gym or workout gear.

Grab a short iron, stand tall with your arms extended straight out in front of you. The club will be horizontal to the ground at about chest height. Now rotate back as far as you can without too much hip rotation, then rotate through as far as you can with more hip rotation just like your golf swing.

Now this is a dynamic movement that will greatly improve your body’s ability to turn back fully and through to a complete finish for maximum power and distance.

In closing, don’t get me wrong!

You can definitely do static stretches and not hurt your golf swing. But the emphasis should be on more dynamic stretches, and less holding stretches to maximize your golfing potential.

As you can see, this is a much different approach to stretching for golf.
